Hikaru “Howard” Sugi is executive vice president and a board member of Japan-based DENSO Corp. and president and chief executive officer (CEO) of DENSO’s North American headquarters, DENSO International America, Inc. (DIAM). As president and CEO of DIAM, Sugi also is chair of the Board of Directors for the North American DENSO Group and the South American DENSO Group.
In 1974, Sugi began his career in the Thermal Development Department at DENSO Corp. (formerly Nippondenso Co., Ltd.), responsible for developing thermal technologies. Following a series of positions in the Thermal Group, Sugi was promoted to project manager of Air-conditioning Research and Development in 1998. As project manager, Sugi was responsible for air-conditioning system advanced development and cockpit module development. In 2000, he was named director of the same division.
In June 2004, Sugi was named one of DENSO's executive directors. He was promoted to senior executive director in June 2008.
Prior to being named President of DIAM, Sugi oversaw the Engineering Research and Development Center, Hybrid System Engineering Department and New Business Promotion Department. He will continue to serve in these roles, as well as president of DIAM and DENSO in North America until July 2003.
Sugi earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Tokyo. After graduation, he joined DENSO Corp. in 1974.
