Hikaru “Howard” Sugi is president and chief executive officer (CEO) of DENSO’s North American headquarters, DENSO International America, Inc. (DIAM), and senior executive director of Japan-based DENSO Corp. As president and CEO of DIAM, Sugi also is chair of the Board of Directors for the North American DENSO Group.
Prior to being named president and CEO of DIAM, Sugi oversaw the Engineering Research and Development Center, Hybrid System Engineering Department and New Business Promotion Department. He will continue to serve in these roles, as well as president and CEO of DIAM and DENSO in North America.
In 1974, Sugi began his career in the Thermal Development Department at DENSO Corp. (formerly Nippondenso Co., Ltd.), responsible for developing thermal technologies. Following a series of positions in the Thermal Group, Sugi was promoted to project manager of Air-conditioning Research and Development in 1998. As project manager, Sugi was responsible for air-conditioning system advanced development and cockpit module development. In 2000, he was named director of the same division.
In June 2004, Sugi was named one of DENSO's executive directors. He was promoted to senior executive director in June 2008.
Sugi earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Tokyo. After graduation, he joined DENSO Corp. in 1974.
