The department coordinates corporate environmental and safety initiatives for DENSO's North American regional operations, coordinates customer environmental and safety support activities for DENSO International America's engineering and marketing divisions and North American operations, and handles all environmental and safety services for all DENSO International America locations. A graduate of Grand Valley State University with a bachelor's degree in Biology, Townsend minored in Occupational Safety and Health. He worked with an environmental consulting company as an environmental specialist and safety program manager before joining DENSO as a specialist in 1996. Townsend is chair of DENSO's North American Product Substance of Environmental Concern (SoC) committee, which tracks regulatory, industry and customer product SoC requirements and develops SoC policy for North America. He also serves as secretary of the DENSO North American Environmental Committee. In his nine years with DENSO International America, Townsend has directed several major initiatives. In addition to helping develop a consolidated environmental action plan for DENSO's North American operations, he has coordinated the development and implementation of a system-consistent ISO 14001 program for all North American DENSO manufacturing operations. ISO 14001 is a voluntary worldwide standard of excellence for environmental management, and Townsend has led the development and implementation of ISO 14001 at DENSO International America. In doing so, the company has become one of the first non-manufacturing DENSO facilities to receive the certification. # # #
