DENSO dedicates its resources to the continuing improvement of every phase of activity including management, design, development, product manufacturing and its relationship with the community. PRODUCTS DENSO is committed to developing eco-friendly products that help prevent global warming, reduce resource depletion and reduce environmentally hazardous substances. * In 2005, DENSO developed an 1,800-bar common rail system with piezo injectors for diesel engines, drastically reducing nitrogen oxides and particulate emissions. * In 2005, DENSO developed a hybrid control computer, DC-DC converter and an electric compressor with an integrated inverter for use in hybrid SUVs. * In 2004, DENSO co-developed the world's first mercury-free discharge lamp system. * In 2004, DENSO co-developed the world's first lead-free piezoelectric ceramic material. RECYCLING DENSO focuses on recycling, including improving the recyclability of auto parts, using easy-to-recycle materials, along with designing new parts-recycling technology and systems. "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle," for waste produced during manufacturing, is still an active policy at DENSO. * DENSO has developed new designs to reduce the amount of packaging materials and prepackaged items delivered to auto manufacturers, resulting in improved transportation efficiency and material reduction. * DENSO Manufacturing Michigan, Inc. provides materials to SCRAP (Scrounge Center for Reusable Art Parts), a non-profit friends-of-the-arts group that uses scrap materials as a resource for art projects. - more - CLEAN WASTEWATER DENSO has pretreatment facilities designed to clean on-site wastewater and use it for other purposes, working in compliance with the Clean Water Act. * In 2004, DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, Inc. and DENSO Manufacturing Athens Tennessee, Inc. were awarded the Kentucky/Tennessee Water Environment Association Pretreatment Excellence Award. * In 2003, DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, Inc. was awarded the Little River Watershed Association Award for industrial environmental protection. * In 1996, American Industrial Manufacturing Services was named the Southern California Plant of the Year for its innovative ways to minimize waste and its effective methods for wastewater treatment. FUEL EFFICIENCY/EXHAUST EMISSIONS DENSO is working to produce new technologies and products that meet or exceed exhaust emissions regulations and standards. * DENSO was part of the team that developed an electrical inverter air conditioning system to provide cooling for hybrid vehicles when the engine is in 'idle stop,' which saves fuel and cuts emissions. * In 2004, DENSO earned the Climate Protection Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for what is considered essential technology for the market expansion of hybrid and fuel cell vehicles. * In 2003, DENSO developed a new refrigeration method, which improves energy efficiency by 50 percent and the refrigeration capacity by 25 percent of cooling systems utilizing this technology. * DENSO has developed the world's first non-fluorocarbon car air conditioner that uses carbon dioxide (CO2) as a refrigerant. * In 2002, DENSO earned the Climate Protection Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for its pioneering design and energy saving features. * As Congress is passing legislation to improve fuel efficiency standards, DENSO is also working to improve energy efficiency of automotive components, supporting the development of clean-energy vehicles and developing products, such as the anti-idling function, that help prevent global warming and resource depletion. * In 1997, DENSO successfully developed a compact variable cam timing system that controls engine exhaust, boosting fuel efficiency and reducing exhaust emissions. * In 1993, DENSO earned a Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for developing methods to convert air conditioning systems to HFC-134a, which replaced the ozone-depleting refrigerant CFC-12. - more - ISO 14001 CERTIFICATION DENSO is ISO 14001 certified in environmental management-working to minimize its activities harmful effects on the environment, and raising awareness and improvement in environmental issues. Companies Certified in ISO 14001: All existing U.S. DENSO sites in full production had been certified by the year 2000. DENSO was one of the first companies in the U.S. to become certified in 1998. COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT SUPPORT DENSO is committed to ensuring a positive relationship with the community and environment. For example: * DENSO International America, Inc. fields a corporate team to participate in the annual Rouge River Cleanup and also sponsors The Rouge Education Program, encouraging environmental education and conservation of the Rouge watershed. * In 2001, DENSO was named a Best Friend of the Rouge, the highest award given by the non-profit Friends of the Rouge organization. * DENSO International America, Inc. is a partner in The Greening of Detroit, dedicated to urban reforestation and tree planting. * In 2001, DENSO earned the Gold Trowel Award in recognition of its efforts to improve the environment. * Associated Fuel Pump Systems Corporation hosted the South Carolina Wildlife Federation's Habitat Steward Training Workshop and environmental team. * DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee, Inc. participates in the Cades Cove Project, a volunteer effort with the U.S. National Parks. * DENSO Manufacturing Michigan, Inc. participates in National Trails Day, a maintenance and clean-up effort. * DENSO Manufacturing Canada, Inc. supports Environmental Week and Park Clean up. DENSO ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE DENSO's Environment Committee, established in 1992, evaluates and designs company-wide policies and objectives that relate to environmental protection. Environment Committee Policies: Reinforcing environmental management, environment-friendly development and design, achieving clean factories and promotion of external environmental action alliances. # # #
