DENSO Signs a MOU with Thai ITS Association to Ease Traffic Congestion and Reduce CO2 Emissions

Press Releases

KARIYA (Japan) – DENSO Corporation and DENSO International Asia Co. Ltd. (DIAT), a DENSO group company in Thailand, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in February 2014, with Thai Intelligent Transport System (ITS). This collaboration launched in March 2014 and will continue until March 2015. Its goal is to ease traffic congestion through the use of Vehicle-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2X) communications.

In large cities like Bangkok, the number of vehicles has increased dramatically, which has also resulted in an increase in traffic congestion and accidents. There have been growing expectations for the use of V2X communications among governments and car users to help alleviate traffic congestion and prevent accidents within Thailand.

DENSO Corporation, DIAT and Thai ITS will collaborate their research efforts to gather wireless data on urban streets, as well as evaluate and analyze information systems that are commercialized in Japan to determine its adaptability to the traffic conditions of Thailand. The results of the project will be used in formulating future ITS policies in Thailand.

DENSO began developing wireless communication devices in 2003, which are the main components of V2X communications. Performance of V2X has been tested using vehicles on simulated urban streets. DENSO has supplied in-vehicle units, which represent the development results of joint demonstration experiments, by automakers and governmental organizations in Japan, the U.S. and Europe. DENSO remains committed to introducing V2X communications, helping to reduce CO2 emissions, reducing traffic congestion and minimizing traffic accidents.

DENSO Foundation Announces 2014 Grants to Drive Innovation in Auto Industry

Press Releases

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – How can we prepare today’s students to be tomorrow’s automotive engineers? Let them get their hands on advanced technology, 3D printers, dynamometers, simulators – all the tools that make the auto industry fun.

“The DENSO Foundation is all about engaging and inspiring students to pursue technology and engineering fields,” said Doug Patton, president of the DENSO North America Foundation. “Our mission is to bridge that gap between what students learn in school and the ‘real’ world.”

Since its inception in 2001, the DENSO North America Foundation (DNAF), philanthropic arm of global auto parts supplier DENSO’s North American headquarters, DENSO International America, Inc. (DIAM), has been dedicated to advancing the auto industry through grants to colleges and universities. The Foundation provides students with technology, tools and experiences similar to that of the professional workplace they’ll experience after graduation.

“Without getting your hands dirty and getting involved, you won’t know how things work,” said David E. Cole, member of the DNAF Board of Directors and chairman emeritus and founder of the Center for Automotive Research. “And, that’s exactly what the DENSO Foundation is trying to change. We’re helping spark an interest and preparing students for a fast-paced, evolving industry where there’s a serious need for engineers and manufacturing professionals. The shortage of skilled professionals in the industry is an international challenge that the DENSO Foundation is committed to tackling.”

Dallas Smolarek, application engineer at DIAM, is proof that a hands-on experience is the hook that drives and develops students to work in the auto industry. Working in the DENSO Design Center at Michigan Technological University, a DNAF-funded lab, allowed Smolarek to learn what books couldn’t teach her.

“Working in the design center, I was able to follow a project from beginning to end and see the progression of a product – from design and development to prototyping and testing,” said Smolarek. “I learned how to take a comprehensive approach to projects and consider the overall impact. Just because it looks good on paper, doesn’t mean it will work.”

Her experience prepared her for her current role at DENSO, having to take a systems approach to powertrain product development and working in a variety of different areas.

The DNAF wants to see more students like Smolarek, excited about helping the auto industry advance and leading innovation. In 2014, the DNAF awarded more than $753,000 to 19 colleges and universities in North America.

Funds will support a range of projects – from advancing education in driver assistance, advanced safety and robotics programs to supporting competitive student vehicle teams and building new learning centers.

DENSO Helps Detroit’s Hidden River Make a Comeback

Press Releases

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Rouge River is gaining some green ground, thanks to a sea of volunteers who flood the area every year.

Over the past five years, volunteers from DENSO International America, Inc. have pulled more than 31,000 lbs. of invasive species, removed over 30 logjams, picked up tons of trash and planted a garden to green up the area.

This year, on June 7, from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., DENSO volunteers will be at it again. Not only are they removing logjams and trash, but volunteers will also be taking steps to keep the green going.

Rock On with Environmental Education
DENSO is partnering with Cranbrook Institute of Science on a series of youth educational activities at this year’s Rouge Rescue cleanup event. Cranbrook will be on-site at DENSO sharing the importance of rocks and minerals, bugs, insects and animals through interactive activities.

Spreading the Green
As the river continues to recover and less invasive species return, DENSO is doing all it can to keep spreading the green, including prepping, planting and maintaining a native garden on the DENSO Southfield campus.

Working with the Friends of the Rouge, City of Southfield and Natural Community Services, historically a team of more than 100 DENSO employees and their families participate in the annual Rouge Rescue cleanup.

DENSO has supported Friends of the Rouge for more than 16 consecutive years, with financial contributions and participation in the Rouge Education Project and annual Rouge Rescue Cleanup events. DENSO, as a company, was born and raised in rural Japan – surrounded by local farmers whose livelihood was dependent on the land. Because of this upbringing, the idea of helping your neighbor and preserving the environment has long been engrained in DENSO’s 60-year history. With more than 100 volunteers every year, the Rouge River cleanup is DENSO’s largest annual environmental volunteer activity.

Volunteers will meet at DIAM, located at 24777 Denso Drive, just south of Franklin Road off Telegraph in Southfield.

Interviews are available with team volunteers and company vice presidents. Great photo and video opportunities. For on-site contacts during event, call JoAnna McCulloch at 248-219-9947.

DENSO Develops a New low cost Fuel Injection System for Small Motorcycles

Press Releases

KARIYA (Japan) – Global automotive supplier DENSO Corporation has developed a new electronic fuel injection system for small motorcycles called DIET-FI*. DIET-FI is the world’s first fuel injection system that doesn’t use a throttle position sensor or engine temperature sensor. Instead, it uses newly developed control technologies that ensure the same fuel economy and environmental performance as conventional fuel injection systems, thus cutting costs.
*DIET-FI (DENSO Intelligent Economical Technology-Fuel Injection)

Usually, fuel injection systems are only used in motorcycles, but in recent years there has been a growing need to apply these systems to smaller motorized bikes up to the size of 150cc that are used in emerging markets, like China.

DENSO researched this trend and identified a low-cost fuel injection system that delivers similar fuel economy and environmental performance as conventional systems but with fewer components.

DENSO’s DIET-FI has five fewer components than conventional systems. Through extensive research, DENSO developed control technologies that were able to eliminate the throttle position sensor, intake air temperature sensor, engine temperature sensor and ISC idle speed control step motor. Specific compensation technologies include a temperature estimation control that integrates a thermistor into an electronic control unit and a fuel metering control to determine acceleration/deceleration using an intake air pipe pressure sensor.

DIET-FI is currently manufactured by Gongcheng DENSO (Chongqing) Co., Ltd., a group company that manufactures motorcycle components and supplied to Wuyang-Honda Motors (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd.

DENSO is committed to developing environmental technologies that help improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, as well as develop products suited to the regional’s needs.

[Reference: Overview of FI systems (electronic fuel injection systems)]
FI systems for motorcycles consist of sensors, actuators, and ECUs to ensure high-precision control of the air-fuel ratio. The optimal fuel injection volume is calculated based on the air volume, engine condition, etc., which are detected by sensors. The fuel from the fuel pump is fed into the engine by injectors with high precision.
The widespread application of FI systems to small motorcycles will require smaller components, simpler systems, fewer components, and lower cost compared with four-wheelers and large motorcycles.

KARIYA, Japan— DENSO Corporation today announced its global financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014:

– Consolidated net sales totaled 4,095.9 billion yen (US$39.8 billion), a 14.4 percent increase from the previous year.
– Consolidated operating income totaled 377.7 billion yen (US$3.7 billion), a 44.0 percent increase from the previous year.
– Consolidated net income totaled 287.4 billion yen (US$2.8 billion), a 58.2 percent increase from the previous year.

”The sales and operating income increased due to an increase in car production mainly in developed countries, in addition to the impact of the weak yen,” said Nobuaki Katoh, president and CEO of DENSO Corporation.

In Japan, the increase in car production and the impact of the weak yen led to an increase in sales to 2,717.6 billion yen (US$26.4 billion), an 10.3 percent increase from the previous year. Also, despite an increase mainly in R&D expenses, increase in production volume and the currency exchange gain, in addition to the cost reduction effort, led to an operating income of 283.3 billion yen (US$2.8 billion), a 66.0 percent increase from the previous year.

In North America, an increase in car production and the impact of the weak yen led to an increase in sales to 816.6 billion yen (US$7.9 billion), a 28.5 percent increase from the previous year. As a result of the increase in production volume, the operating income totaled 14.7 billion yen (US$142.4 million), a 9.1 percent increase from the previous year.

In Europe, the gradual recovery from the economic slump and the effect of the weak yen led to an increase in sales to 498.9 billion yen (US$4.8 billion), a 34.0 percent increase from the previous year. As a result of the increase in production volume, the operating income totaled 12.4 billion yen (US$120.1 million), a 216.1 percent increase from the previous year.

In Asia and Oceania, the increase in car production mainly in China and the effect of the weak yen resulted in a sales increase to 943.1 billion yen (US$9.2 billion), a 18.8 percent increase from the previous year. Increase in labor costs and the expenditure on the establishment of plants and technical centers for future competitiveness led to an operating income of 71.2 billion yen (US$692.1 million), a 3.3 percent decrease from the previous year.

In other areas, mainly the South American region, including countries such as Brazil and Argentina, sales totaled 74.3 billion yen (US$722.4 million), a 16.3 percent increase from the previous year. The operating income totaled 27.0 million yen (US$0.3 million), a 99.1 percent decrease from the previous year.

“For the new fiscal year, we expect sales to increase and income to decrease from the previous year. This is due to the decrease in production volume within Japan, in addition to investment costs for initiating new products and to increase capabilities in overseas plants for future competitiveness,” said Katoh.

DENSO receives a John Deere Supplier Innovation Award

Press Releases

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Creativity, feasibility, collaboration and bottom-line impact – the four factors that led to DENSO grabbing hold of a John Deere Supplier Innovation Award. DENSO worked with Deere & Company to develop the new G4 diesel common rail fuel system. The innovation was recognized in February at John Deere’s Achieving Excellence banquet in Iowa.

“This was truly a collaborative relationship between DENSO and our customer’s engine development team,” said Ron Abbott, director of Heavy Duty Sales at DENSO International America, Inc. “We were able to build a quality product to ensure our customer’s needs were met. Our Heavy Duty team worked tirelessly to develop a system that reached that high level of customer satisfaction.”

This is the first year DENSO received a John Deere’s Supplier Innovation Award. The G4 diesel system has been designed to provide higher fuel pressure, which is critical to emission regulations. This new system allows for improved atomization, which helps reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate material (PM) at the combustion stage.

Deere & Company created the Supplier Innovation Award in 2010 to promote innovation in the company’s supply base and recognize suppliers who think creatively. DENSO is one of eight recipients of the award this year.

Three Reasons DENSO is Dedicated to Telling the Samurai Story at the DIA

Press Releases

DETROIT – The samurai are charging into the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) to tell their story of battle and culture in the Samurai: Beyond the Sword exhibit, March 9 – June 1.

DENSO International America, Inc. (DIAM) donated $50,000 to help tell the samurai story through a display of more than 125 pieces of artwork.

“This gives a true picture of samurai and their impact not only on the Japanese culture, but on the world,” said Bob Townsend, director of External Affairs at DIAM. “While we call the Metro Detroit community our home, we are still rooted in Japanese culture and want to share this influence and history with our community.”

Why Samurai?
1. Samurai were the rock stars of their time.
Samurai played a huge role in shaping the Japanese culture. They were true innovators, influencing culture, spiritual practices and artwork. From starting the Japanese tradition of tea drinking to launching new fashion trends, they were always leading the way. DENSO was founded on these same principles of vision and foresight. It’s this foresight that allows DENSO to stay on the cutting-edge of technology innovation.

2. Samurai swords raised the stakes on quality.
The most skilled samurai carried around two distinct swords that made them stand out. And the value of each sword was determined by the quality of the point. DENSO strives to provide new value through quality, and it is this focus on “quality first” thinking that helps to make DENSO successful.

3. Samurai armor was an art form.
Samurai armor was not just protection, it was art. Each suit of armor had intricate lacing, colors and patterns to make it unique to the wearer. Like the samurai, DENSO is committed to monozukuri – the art of making things. From design to production, DENSO is dedicated to continuous improvement, quality and detail.

DENSO to Test Wireless Charging System

Press Releases

KARIYA (Japan) – Global automotive supplier DENSO Corporation will begin a ten-month field test of its wireless battery charging system in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The field test is intended to identify any potential operational issues and also look at ways to enhance the convenience of wireless charging. The field test will begin on Feb. 24 and end in December 2014.

How it works:
When there are two coils apart, electric current can flow through one coil by applying electricity to the other coil. The wireless charging system uses this mechanism to wirelessly transmit power from a power transmission pad on the ground to a power-receiving pad equipped on a vehicle.

For the test, DENSO has equipped a Yamato Transport delivery truck with a power receiver that will wirelessly receive the energy from a power transmission pad located on the pavement of a 7-Eleven convenience store parking lot. The electricity charged in the truck’s battery is then used to power the refrigeration system while the engine is stopped during pickups and deliveries. Not only will the system improve convenience, but it will also help reduce emissions of refrigeration trucks since the battery will continue to power the refrigeration system even when the engine is off.

DENSO has been developing the wireless charging system with the goal to commercialize by 2020. DENSO is working to reduce the size, weight, and cost of the system while also looking to enhance convenience.

In Japan, Toyota City is designated as an experimental city for next-generation energy sources and social systems, a program which has been promoted by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry since April 2010.

DENSO Develops EGR Valve Unit

Press Releases

KARIYA, Japan – Global automotive supplier DENSO has developed an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve unit, a major component of EGR systems that helps make diesel engine emissions cleaner. The new unit, the first in the world to integrate an air intake throttle valve and an EGR valve, is half the size of conventional models and requires fewer components, thus reducing costs. The unit will be installed in a diesel passenger vehicle to be sold in Europe from later this year.

Reducing size
Conventionally, air intake throttle valves and EGR valves were separately installed to vehicles. The air intake throttle valve controls the amount of air entering the engine and the EGR valve controls the amount of exhaust gas to be recirculated into the engine. By integrating the two valves into one unit, DENSO combined the ducts and reduced the connectors, resulting to reducing the size to half compared to previous models. As the EGR system needs to be installed in a limited space close to the engine, a smaller system enables automakers to design engines more flexibility.

Reducing cost
Conventionally, a motor for valve opening and closing, paired with a sensor to detect the valve opening and closing angle, were needed for both the air intake throttle valve and EGR valve. However, DENSO’s new unit, which integrates the two valves, needs only one motor and one sensor, thus reducing the cost.

Flexible to meet various engine parameters
The air intake throttle valve and EGR valve are connected through a highly flexible coupling (cam-link mechanism), allowing the new unit to be applied to various engine parameters, including displacement and output, merely by changing the shape of the connection between the two valves (cam profile).

About diesel engine EGR systems
The diesel engine EGR system, which consists of an EGR valve, an air intake throttle valve, and an EGR cooler, recirculates a portion of the exhaust gas into the engine to lower the combustion temperature and hence reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx). With the introduction of stricter exhaust emission regulations worldwide, including Euro 6 standards in Europe, this system has attracted much attention.

The main type of EGR system used today is the high pressure loop (HPL) EGR system where the exhaust gas to be recirculated is taken from an upstream section of the exhaust passage. However, this system has a disadvantage: diverting a fraction of the exhaust gas before the turbocharger that uses exhaust gas energy to force extra air into the engine reduces the amount of exhaust gas energy which can be used by the turbocharger, which makes it difficult for the forced induction device to produce high power. Therefore, the combination of a high pressure loop EGR with low pressure loop (LPL) EGR that takes the exhaust gas to be recirculated from a downstream section of the exhaust passage, is expected to be widely used in the future.

DENSO developments
DENSO has been mass-producing its first EGR valves used in LPL EGR systems since February 2011. It has also been mass-producing LPL EGR systems with a separate air intake throttle valve and EGR valve since November 2012. DENSO’s new EGR valve unit is designed for LPL EGR systems. DENSO will continue to develop products and technologies to improve the environmental performance of diesel vehicles

KARIYA (Japan) – DENSO Corporation today announced its third quarter global financial results for the nine months ending Dec. 31, 2013:

– Consolidated net sales totaled 3,016.6 billion yen (US$28.8 billion), a 17.4 percent increase from the previous year.
– Consolidated operating income totaled 289.9 billion yen (US$2.8 billion), a 54.2 percent increase from the previous year.
– Consolidated net income totaled 225.6 billion yen (US$2.2 billion), a 72.5 percent increase from the previous year.

”The sales and operating income increased due to an increase in car production mainly in North America, in addition to the impact of the weak yen,” said Kenichiro Ito, executive director of DENSO Corporation.

In Japan, although car production level was the same as the previous year, the increase of export sales and the effect of the weak yen led to an increase in sales to 2,020.0 billion yen (US$19.3 billion), an 11.1 percent increase from the previous year. Also, despite an increase mainly in R&D expenses, the increase in production volume and the currency exchange gain, in addition to the cost reduction effort, led to an operating income of 220.1 billion yen (US$2.1 billion), a 75.6 percent increase from the previous year.

In North America, an increase in car production and the impact of the weak yen led to an increase in sales to 599.8 billion yen (US$5.7 billion), a 33.2 percent increase from the previous year. Hino and DENSO Jointly Develop the World’s First Electric Refrigerator System for Heavy-duty Trucks Using a Hybrid Unit

Press Releases

HINO & KARIYA (Japan)— Hino Motors, Ltd. (Hino) and DENSO Corporation (DENSO) have jointly developed the world’s first electric refrigerator system for heavy-duty trucks using a hybrid unit. This system is used in the Hino Profia, which will be released on Feb. 1, in Japan.

With the combination of Hino’s hybrid powertrain system technology and DENSO’s electric refrigerator system technology, the two companies have developed a high-quality refrigerator system that helps improve fuel economy, improves refrigeration performance, and is quieter when operating.

Hybrid trucks conventionally use energy generated from hybrid systems to assist the vehicle’s driving. However, this new truck uses energy from hybrid unit only for the new electric refrigeration system, which saves fuel.

Heavy-duty refrigerated trucks typically require an auxiliary engine or need to use their main engine power to operate the compressor of the refrigerator. The newly developed electric refrigerator system uses energy generated while driving or regenerated energy from the hybrid unit to operate the refrigerator’s compressor. This substantially reduces the amount of fuel normally used to drive the engine to operate the compressor, thus reducing CO2 emissions as well.

Compared to refrigerated trucks that use an auxiliary engine to operate the compressor, the new system is quieter, and contributes to an approximately 150kg weight reduction because it does not need an auxiliary engine.

In addition, compared with those having the main engine-driven compressor system, the new truck can operate the refrigeration compressor at a constant rotational speed using the energy supplied from hybrid system, which stabilizes the refrigeration performance and quality regardless if the truck is moving or stopped.

Trucks with main engine-driven compressor systems need to have separate refrigerator components in the engine compartment, under the floor panel, and in other places. However, the new truck uses a new integrated refrigeration unit that includes an electric compressor, condenser, and other devices. This simplified structure uses fewer tubes and wires and also is easier to maintain.

The new refrigerator system includes a stand-by unit that can beconnected to an external 200-volt power source so the refrigerator temperature can be maintained while the engine off for a long period of time. The stand-by unit also has a timer function, which can pre-freeze the refrigerator room without the driver’s operation. This helps reduce fuel consumption and manpower costs.

The Hino Profia with an electric refrigerator system reduces the amount of fuel required to operate its refrigerator. The new truck’s fuel efficiency exceeds Japan’s 2015 fuel efficiency standards by 5 percent. Moreover, as standard features, the Hino Profia has advanced safety systems including an enhanced pre-crash safety system (PCS*1) designed to support drivers to prevent rear-end collision with vehicle in motion ahead, a lane-departure warning system that issues an alarm at a more appropriate timing, and a driver monitoring system that provides more precise detection. Thus, the Hino Profia is a heavy-duty truck that achieves greater environmental and safety performance.

The compact and light-weight hybrid unit, installed to the Hino Dutro Hybrid with proven results in the market, was optimized as an energy source for this new refrigerator. This enables improved eco-friendly performance, while minimizing effects to load capacity and maintaining economy performance for the heavy-duty truck.

Hino will continue to offer useful products that are environmentally safe and user- friendly. And DENSO will continue to develop products and technologies that help automakers increase the environmental performance of their vehicles to promote a more eco-friendly society.

DENSO Develops Highly Standardized Automotive Climate Control Unit

Press Releases

KARIYA, Japan – Global automotive supplier DENSO has developed a new automotive climate control unit that can be used in a wide variety of vehicles ranging from compact to luxury cars. Conventional climate control units are often designed and tailored to each vehicle model; however, because of unit’s new structure, the company was able to standardize components while also meeting the required performance. This highly standardized automotive climate control unit, which is also smaller and lighter than previous models, is the world’s first of its kind.

“Many of the subcomponents for this product, such as air mix door, servo motor and blower fan are newly developed, which allowed us to reduce the unit’s size by 20 percent compared to DENSO’s conventional model,” said Katsuhisa Shimokawa, executive director responsible for DENSO Corporation’s Thermal Systems Business Unit.

The thickness of the air mix door is half that of DENSO’s conventional one, which reduces the depth and weight of the unit. Also, the conventional unit required several servo motors to operate the air mix door, whereas the new unit has standardized doors and needs only one, enabling the unit case to be made smaller. The new blower fan’s wing blades are re-shaped to best suite the wind flow, which allowed the new fan to become 15 percent smaller and consume 20 percent less power, while also maintaining high air discharge capacity.

“Customers are very receptive to our new design concept due to its performance benefits and smaller size,” said Pat Bassett, vice president of Thermal Systems, DENSO International America, Inc. “Despite its common design customers are developing their own unique ways to utilize the benefits of the new climate control unit.”

With these new technologies, the new smaller, lighter climate control unit with higher performance can also be used in eco-friendly cars. For instance, for stop/start system the evaporator in the unit can be replaced with a cold storage evaporator, and for hybrid and electric vehicles the heater core can be replaced with a heat pump air conditioning system. Also by changing the blower fan to two layer – structure, to take in external air and circulate internal air simultaneously, the air conditioning system could be used for vehicles with limited heat sources.

DENSO’s new climate control unit is used in the new HARRIER, which was released last December and in the NOAH and VOXY which was released this month. This new climate control unit will be offered for a wide variety of vehicle models all over the world. DENSO will continue to help create an advanced automotive society by developing technologies that can improve the comfort and environmental performance of vehicles.

DENSO, MIT AgeLab and Touchstone Evaluations Establish New Consortium to Study Driver Distraction

Press Releases

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., – Leading a new effort to address the continuing challenge of driver distraction, global automotive supplier DENSO, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AgeLab and Touchstone Evaluations have founded a consortium, Advanced Human Factors Evaluator for Automotive Demand (AHEAD), that aims to develop new perspectives and methodologies for a holistic and objective approach to measuring driver demand. Honda R&D Americas, Inc., Subaru Research & Development and Jaguar Land Rover have joined the program as initial partners, and discussions with other global automakers and portable electronics suppliers are ongoing.

The new consortium brings together leading researchers, automakers and suppliers to take a fresh look at methods to reliably and repeatedly assess the demands associated with in-vehicle interactions. Further, this work aims to provide the auto industry with an evaluation platform that better supports driver safety as the potential for automotive human-machine interface (HMI) complexity increases.

“We know drivers want to be connected while driving, but how do we safely give drivers what they want?” said Doug Patton, senior vice president of Engineering at DENSO International America, Inc. “We need to evaluate driver workload – but currently there is no quantifiable and objective metrology model in place. Not to mention, there’s a high price tag attached to researching and developing something like this. With that said, forming a consortium will help reach the goal of establishing a common methodology.”

The Goal of AHEAD:
Current evaluation methods for HMI technologies are primarily based upon criteria developed before the advent of modern integrated technologies such as voice interfaces, touch screens and multi-function controllers. Perhaps most importantly, the evaluation methods utilized to date don’t consider the tradeoffs that exist as demand is moved between modalities such as vision, touch, sound, haptics, gesture and cognition. The effort aims to make early stage prototype evaluations more feasible where design changes can be more effectively achieved – in contrast to evaluations that frequently take place later in the vehicle development process.

“Establishing a common understanding of human performance of in-vehicle tasks that can distract drivers from the primary task of operating the vehicle safely is an important goal for the industry,” said Steven Feit, Chief Engineer of Infotainment Development at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. “This type of research and collaboration will lead to new automotive innovations and the inclusion of exciting features and consumer technology that can be operated safely in vehicles.”

The goal of AHEAD is to create a quantifiable objective evaluation toolkit that will be useful across the industry for supporting new HMI development; and, one that will improve the effectiveness and reliability of data, helping manufactures and portable electronics suppliers offer intuitive, convenient and safe interfaces to the consumer while more effectively meeting industry and governmental guidelines.

Joining forces to lead the technical effort are researchers from the MIT AgeLab and Touchstone Evaluations, Inc. The MIT AgeLab has lead efforts to utilize to multi-dimensional assessment by holistically combining physiological, visual attention and performance measures as part of HMI evaluation. “Physiological measures complement traditional visual attention and performance measures to provide a more complete picture of the interacting demands of modern HMI.” Dr. Bryan Reimer, a Research Scientist in the MIT AgeLab, the Associate Director of The New England University Transportation Center at MIT and the MIT technical lead for AHEAD.
