I Got My COVID-19 Vaccine!: Richard Derksen, DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee

More and more DENSO associates are choosing to get vaccinated against the threat of COVID-19.  Intelligent Cockpit’s Richard Dreksen recently shared his story.

Why did you choose to get the vaccine?

I just want mine and everybody else’s life to get back to normal. I hate the masks and we know that the vaccines work – more so than the masks.

How was your vaccination experience?

A sore arm after my first dose. Throwing football with my son helped that. I was tired after my second dose, but that only lasted for a couple hours.

What would you tell others about getting the COVID-19 vaccine?

Everyone has a right to decide what is best for them.  You shouldn’t be forced to get it.  Getting to 70 percent herd immunity will help remove restrictions and help us deal with any future complications from variants.  Just be open to getting it and do what is best for you.

Weekly COVID-19 Case Update 

This week, we learned of two (2) DIAM associates who were diagnosed with COVID-19.

• One associate was last on site at DIAM Southfield on May 5, and received a positive diagnosis on May 11.
• One associate received a positive diagnosis on May 13, but has been working remotely since April.

Please respect confidentiality, even if you believe you know who these individuals are.

Weekly COVID-19 Case Update

Thankfully, overall case rates across Canada, Mexico and the United States continued to decline this week. We are reporting 11 new cases, all attributed to community exposure. One case remains under investigation in Canada. This brings us to 3,105 total cases for DENSO in North America.

Exposed in Community – transmission attributed to community or home

Exposed at DENSO – transmission attributed to DENSO site contact

Unable to Determine – cannot confidently determine the source of exposure after thorough investigation (may have been exposed outside or inside of work)

Under Investigation – investigation is on-going both internally as well as with county health departments

What does new CDC guidance mean for DENSO?

On Thursday, May 13, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released new guidance for fully vaccinated individuals. We know you are anxious to understand how these changes impact you.

Here is what you need to know:

• Updated CDC guidance is only applicable to fully vaccinated individuals.
• Within DENSO, we have many associates who have not yet had the opportunity to receive their full vaccination. The safety of all of our associates is our top priority and therefore we need to determine how to manage a blended work environment consisting of vaccinated and non-vaccinated associates.
• In addition to the CDC’s recent guidance, DENSO must also consider the following in updating our workplace policies and processes:

• • • Federal requirements including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) COVID-19 temporary emergency standard currently under review
    • Any applicable state and local requirements

• For now, DENSO will continue its current practices for mask wearing and social distancing at all of its North American facilities.
